Worked: Introduction and read through.

I introduced the theory of epic theatre to them. In order to help them understand the acting needed, I used one of Brecht’s essays, “The Street Scene,” in this first rehearsal. I chose Ramona to act as a police officer and let her go out of the door. Then, I picked Nicholas and Claire and let them have a car accident in front of the other actors or actresses. After they argued about the accident, I let Ramona come back and asked her to judge the event. After she listened to the reasons of the two people in the accident, I asked the other actors and actresses to become witnesses and “show” what they had seen to the police officer. When they only stated their opinions, I encouraged them to use their body language to demonstrate their statements. When they did the perfect “showings,” I told them that this is a “demonstration,” which is what I wanted them to do in the following day’s rehearsal. After the discussion of the theory of epic theatre, I told them that everyone has to prepare an introduction of two sentences for the beginning of the performance: one was to introduce themselves, another was to introduce the character that they played. When they finished the introductions, I went over the rehearsal schedule and had them read through the play.
